the ancient ritual of
the carnival of schignano
The traditional Carnival of Schignano, a small village located in the mountains around the Como lake, is one of the most beautiful and oldest in Italy. Dating back to the seventeenth century, is based on an archaic theatrical form, that of the opposition. The ritual that is staged is played on the opposition between two different masks, 'Bei' and 'Brut', the beautiful and the ugly. These are the main actors of a representation centered on a social division.
